What Is ASME B31.12 and Why Does It Matter for Hydrogen Pipework?

ASME B31.12 is the American standard that covers the design and construction of hydrogen piping and pipelines. Unlike general-purpose piping codes, B31.12 is specifically engineered to account for hydrogen’s unique challenges: high permeability, low molecular weight, and potential for embrittlement.

For fabricators, complying with ASME B31.12 means designing systems that are not just strong, but also safe and reliable over time. It sets expectations for material selection, wall thickness, welding procedures, and testing requirements.

At ShawPF, we regularly fabricate hydrogen pipework to meet or exceed ASME B31.12. This includes using low-permeability materials like 316L stainless steel, documented weld procedures, and full traceability on every component. It’s one of the reasons engineers and contractors trust us with hydrogen projects.
