Why 316L Stainless Steel Is the Go-To Choice for Hydrogen Pipework

When it comes to hydrogen pipework, not all materials are created equal. One of the most trusted materials for hydrogen service is ASTM A312 TP316L stainless steel. But why?

First, 316L is highly resistant to corrosion, which is essential in hydrogen environments. Second, it offers excellent weldability with reduced risk of sensitisation, meaning the welds won’t compromise the pipe’s corrosion resistance. Third, it’s proven to reduce hydrogen permeation thanks to its low carbon content and high chromium-nickel-molybdenum composition.

At ShawPF, 316L stainless steel is our default material for hydrogen systems unless otherwise specified. It balances safety, durability, and cost-effectiveness, making it ideal for both high-pressure and general-purpose hydrogen installations.
